Housing Rights Workshop with HOJO and SLAM

SSMU organized a housing rights workshop with speakers from HOJO (The Housing and Job Resource Centre) and SLAM/MATU (Montreal Autonomous Tenants’ Union) on September 21st to help students to better understand their rights and as the event’s title said “How To Not Get Screwed Over By Your Landlord”.

This workshop covered the different approaches to tenant advocacy whether it be through knowing your rights and using the legal system or through direct action and collective action. The speakers addressed common issues that renters experience such as rent hikes, renovictions, and negligent/ predatory landlords while also discussing how renters and especially students can help to fight gentrification.
